The ThinkShells Email Configuration

With the arrival of authenticated and secure server layer email, there are some issues with configuring the email client. This is the beginning of a list of support sites for common email clients.

Configuration

All users:
set the smtp server to thinkshells.com (requires shell account at ThinkShells)

POP users:
set the pop server to thinkshells.com

IMAP users:
set the imap server to thinkshells.com

Accepting the security certificate

In the mail configuration page of your mailer, set the options to use a password or encryption (SSL), or both.

NOTE: I've not purchased a signed certificate; I signed it using the same methods as the recognized Certificate Authorities and it will work fine and saves us all some money. It is used only here, and only for mail.

When you try to read or send mail the first time you will be asked to accept a certificate and to enter your Unix password. If you've accepted the certificate, this password information will be encrypted and hidden from any intervening systems. The password is good until expired by your mailer, or until you restart your mailer. Some systems allow you to store your password permanently, and while this is not something I would do, it is an option you have.

Netscape 7.0, Mozilla 1.4
Works great - the above instructions were taken almost verbatim from an actual configuration session.

Eudora
http://www.its.uiowa.edu/cs/email/eudora/ssl.html. At least one customer has been frustrated by poor SSL support in this mailer. The server runs on the standard port - ignore any alternate port options in the configuration window.

Another admin found:
Now how to disable TLS on Eudora..? after much fighting with it, giving up.. and then searching comp.mail.eudora.ms-windows (D'oh!) I found that if you add:

SSLSendVersion=6            <x-eudora-option:SSLSendVersion=6>
SSLReceiveVersion=6         <x-eudora-option:SSLReceiveVersion=6>

to the Settings section of the eudora.ini, it tells Eudora to do the right thing.

More on the way.
